Mercedes: Spanish GP engine failure was never seen before

A never-previously seen problem with the turbo on his Formula 1 engine caused Valtteri Bottas to retire from the Spanish Grand Prix, Mercedes has revealed. Bottas retired from third place midway through the Barcelona F1 race, having survived a first-corner collision with Kimi Raikkonen and Max Verstappen. The Finnish driver went on to play a major part in teammate Lewis Hamilton’s victory by delaying Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel. Mercedes brought new engines for the works cars to Barcelona, upgraded for reliability, but was forced to revert Bottas to the one he used at the previous four grands prix after discovering a water leak on his new unit while fixing an electrical fault...
