Fernando Alonso says McLaren is 'learning important lessons' after the team suffered a double retirement in the Canadian Grand Prix. The Spaniard started the race from 13th place on the grid but struggled to defend his position, due to the Honda power unit lacking top speed compared to rival engines. Alonso shared his frustration over team radio after being told over team radio just 24 laps into the race to conserve fuel, saying McLaren looked like 'amateurs'. He later retired from the Canadian Grand Prix after an exhaust issue, with his team-mate Jenson Button exiting the race 10 laps later with an unrelated exhaust problem.
