Stewards confirm changes to Austin qualifying format

+ Formula 1’s usual qualifying format will be revised for the United States Grand Prix due to the absence of Caterham and Marussia. With only 18 cars set to take part in qualifying, just two drivers would be eliminated in Q1 under the current format. Instead, following discussions in Austin on Thursday, the stewards have declared that four cars will be eliminated in both Q1 and Q2, leaving the usual ten drivers to run in the traditional shootout for pole in Q3. “In view of the non-participation of two teams in the 2014 United States Grand Prix, the Stewards have been requested to clarify the format for Qualifying Practice,” read a statement issued by the stewards. “Accordingly,...
