Mercedes explain their 'weird' qualifying at Monza
Mercedes was left to reflect on a missed opportunity at Monza after George Russell qualified second for the Italian Grand Prix, despite the team having appeared to be the favourite for pole throughout much of the weekend. Russell had entered qualifying as the leading contender after Mercedes showed impressive pace in both Friday's running and FP3, where the Briton topped the final practice session. The Silver Arrows initially appeared to have the upper hand in qualifying as well. Ferrari's pace faded compared with practice, while Mercedes' straight-line performance remained strong.
