Mercedes explains unusual programme on opening day in Monza

Mercedes enjoyed an encouraging opening day at the Italian Grand Prix, with George Russell topping FP2 at Monza while the team also gathered valuable race data with Kimi Antonelli ahead of his difficult Sunday. Russell set the fastest time of the second practice session with a 1:22.559, finishing ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, while Antonelli was third with a 1:22.700. The result represented a significant improvement from FP1, where Russell finished third and Antonelli fifth. The Italian also briefly ran wide and put a wheel into the gravel, but otherwise completed a productive day. However, Mercedes was not following the same programme with both cars.
