Horner jokes about cost of bizarre bill from FIA for Red Bull

Red Bull might have claimed both championships in 2022 but the achievement also came with an additional bill from the FIA at the end of the season, something that team boss Christian Horner has jokingly admitted he was taken aback by.

Christian Horner has joked about the "incredible" cost of a bill received by Red Bull from the FIA thanks to the amount of points they scored in 2022. With Max Verstappen and the team having claimed both the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships, the awards were handed out at the annual FIA Prize Giving Ceremony in Bologna on 9 December. Verstappen, Sergio Perez and Horner were all on hand to receive the trophies, and Horner took the opportunity to praise his drivers for what they had achieved during their dominant campaign. "It's very, very special," Horner told media, including RacingNews365.com , at the ceremony. "We broke all our own records, and these two guys have been truly amazing this year, particularly Max has had an outstanding season. "Behind the scenes, [a lot of effort went into preparing for] the biggest regulation changes in 40 years, and the whole team in Milton Keynes rose to that challenge magnificently."

Horner jokes about 'incredible' bill from FIA

Red Bull ended the 2022 season with 17 race wins, two Sprint race victories and 759 points under their belt. However, due to teams paying an entry fee where they pay a fee of $5,770 per World Championship point scored, Horner quipped that the cost of this had taken him by surprise. "I didn't realise how much we had to pay the FIA for the points," Horner joked. "I got the bill the other day, it was incredible!" Despite this, Horner reiterated that he was pleased that Red Bull were the first team to collect the trophy from new FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The entry fee for 2023, should the same amounts as a year earlier apply, will be hefty for Red Bull. With 759 points times $5,770 and a standard fee of over half a million, the team will have to pay $4,956,708 to participate.
