Fernando Alonso ends the season with mixed feelings. The Spaniard is especially happy to leave his period at Alpine behind and start a new project with Aston Martin. To Formula1.com he called the end of the season "disappointing".

2022 has not been a good season for Alonso. The two-time world champion closed the year in ninth place, directly behind teammate Esteban Ocon. There probably could have been more in it for Alonso but the reliability of the car dropped him hard, by his own admission. In Abu Dhabi, Alonso was unable to finish the race for the sixth time this season.

"It’s been a very unlucky season," Alonso said. "I think we were not prepared reliability-wise, and I think it’s the sixth or seventh DNF. And then there were some races that don't even count for that. In Austria, the car didn't even start at the sprint, in Australia I had problems in qualifying, in Canada the battery failed. So yes, of course it's disappointing to finish like that."

Switch to Aston Martin offers perspective

A little later at the Viaplay microphone, Alonso reiterated his analysis of the season once again and also added that he is very much looking forward to switching to Aston Martin next year. "I think it will be a very nice project, I am very optimistic for next year. That motivation is great, especially when you end the season a bit negative and then think of such a nice project for next year... that really puts a smile on my face."
