Fernando Alonso will drive for Aston Martin next season. After Sebastian Vettel, another former world champion will race for the iconic car brand. Now it is just a matter of making a strong car for him.

Aston Martin has had a disappointing season. Time is now beginning to run out, as Aston Martin wants to be a winning team by 2025. Meanwhile, a new factory is almost in place, due to be commissioned early next year. New people have also been recruited to lead the project. Former Red Bull head of aerodynamics Dan Fallows as technical director is one of them. The 2023 car will be the first Aston Martin designed under Fallows' leadership.

Coincidence

Mike Krack, who took over as team boss in February, now looks back and thinks that Aston Martin has been a little too optimistic for this year, he announced via the BBC. That the team is not performing as hoped is a confluence of circumstances. For instance, he points out that Aston Martin may have done a little too much than what the organisation could actually handle. Moreover, Aston Martin suffered from porpoising, which did not help its performance.

"We have a small structure that was relying on a few people where you put a lot of financial resources in and you grow very fast. And if you grow very fast, the whole structure cannot adapt so quickly," Krack said. "Normally you reduce the efficiency if you grow too quickly and this is something that has happened. The [car] concept that was decided was a direction that offered ultimately very high aerodynamic potential but due to porpoising it could never be exploited."

New concept

In the end, Aston Martin chose to create a completely new concept, during the season. With that, the results got slightly better, Krack said. That gives him confidence for the rest of this as well as next season.
