Pierre Gasly admits that he is still unclear about where AlphaTauri place in the pecking order in 2022, given the increasingly tight battle in the midfield. The team currently hold P7 in the Constructors' Championship, and have scored points at four out of the five races so far in the campaign. This point-scoring streak ended at the recent Miami Grand Prix, where Gasly retired following a collision with Lando Norris, while Yuki Tsunoda finished outside of the top 10.
Gasly reflects on close midfield battle
With several teams in the midfield fight this season, Gasly feels that AlphaTauri have to keep on pushing in order to stay on a par. "In the race, I feel like we're struggling a little bit," Gasly told media, including RacingNews365.com . "In qualifying [in Miami], we managed to pull [together] a very strong lap, but it's so tight. "Honestly, I'm not too sure where we stand, but it's really tight. We've got to keep pushing and try to extract every single [thing] from that car, because it's a very, very tight battle between all the midfield."
Have recent upgrades helped AlphaTauri?
AlphaTauri introduced a range of updates to their AT03 at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, including a new floor and front brake ducts. However, given the limited practice time available over that particular weekend due to the addition of the Sprint, the team struggled to fully assess the effectiveness of the changes. When asked after the following event in Miami if the upgrades had been performing well, Gasly explained: "It's still early to make a very strong verdict on that. "I think Imola was kind of good. [In Miami], it looked like [it could have been] a P8 or P9 finish at the end of the race, the way that things were going. "So, it's difficult to say. We'll keep pushing, and for sure we are in the fight for top 10, on the edge, but clearly we've got to keep working and try to make some steps forward in the coming races."
