Sebastian Vettel admits that he was "hoping for more" from his debut season with Aston Martin. The four-time World Champion - who joined the team after spending six years with Ferrari - endured mixed fortunes in 2021. There were some high points, including a podium finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but also several less successful moments. When asked whether the experience at Aston Martin had been what he had signed up for, Vettel told media including RacingNews365.com : "Yes and no. "I think the team is great. I really enjoy working with the team, and I think it's been a big change, obviously. But no, in terms of the results, obviously. "The whole team [and] myself, we were hoping for more."
Aston Martin "hurt by regulation changes" in 2021
Aston Martin finished the 2021 season in seventh place in the Constructors' Championship with 77 points. This marked quite a step back from their prior success in 2020 under the Racing Point guise, where they racked up 195 points to put them in fourth. Vettel feels that changes made to the regulations ahead of the year had a negative impact on the team's car, but remains hopeful that the new rules being introduced for 2022 will provide a good opportunity to progress. "I think we got hurt quite badly by the regulation changes, as the team had a great car last year, but not this year," Vettel said. "So we did what we could. I think it's been some ups and downs, but obviously [we have] high hopes for next year with the new car, new regulations, and the team growing and hopefully getting stronger." Aston Martin have made some staff changes ahead of the season. It was recently announced that Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer had left the team, and engineer Mike Krack has since been confirmed as his replacement in the role .
