Mick Schumacher is not of the belief that any F1 driver could win if they were driving a Mercedes. The German spent much of his debut season in the sport racing at the back of the field, with Haas not able to match the pace of their competitors. However, Schumacher thinks it would be presumptuous to assume that his fortunes would dramatically change if he switched to the Silver Arrows. "Everyone deserves their place in Formula 1," Schumacher told Auto Motor und Sport . "Anyone can drive here. You only know if you can win a race in a Mercedes when you actually sit in it. It would be arrogant to say that."
Schumacher hopes Haas can progress in 2022
Schumacher faced some similarities in his rookie year to George Russell, who also found himself mostly at the back of the field in the Williams when he made his debut in 2019. The Haas driver admits that he misses the battles that he enjoyed in junior categories, but also takes hope from the possibility that the team can progress in the 2022 season. "We're not as far away as the 2019 Williams, so we still have a few battles," Schumacher said. "Of course I would like to have more, and of course I hope that I can grow and develop from it next year." Whilst Schumacher will embark on his second year with Haas, Russell makes the step up to Mercedes. When asked whether seeing Russell move to a leading team after racing near the back gives him added confidence for his own future, Schumacher insists that his focus in purely on his current situation. "My focus is on next year," he said. "Everything else is too far away. "I have to perform well next year first. If that is the case, I can look further into the future."
