Aston Martin announce new Team Principal for 2022 season

Aston Martin have announced their new team boss, replacing the departed Otmar Szafnauer.

Aston Martin have announced the person who will replace Otmar Szafnauer as team boss for 2022. Mike Krack has been appointed in the role, and will step into Szafnauer's shoes to report to team boss Lawrence Stroll. Szafnauer was announced as leaving the team last week . Krack comes with a rich motorsport pedigree, having led BMW's global motorsports operation. He joined BMW in 2014, and was in charge of their Formula E, GT and IMSA programmes, as well as the expansion into the new LMDh formula for IMSA and the WEC. Krack has also worked for Porsche, as well as a decade's worth of experience in Formula 1. He worked for Sauber, including the evolvement into BMW-Sauber.

Krack vows to take on the role "with energy and enthusiasm"

With Krack becoming one of the 10 team bosses for the 2022 season, he thanked team owner Lawrence Stroll and recently appointed group CEO Martin Whitmarsh for the opportunity. "Aston Martin is one of the greatest automotive brands in the world, and to have been asked to play a leading role in delivering the on-track Formula 1 success that such an illustrious name so richly deserves is a challenge that I plan to embrace with energy and enthusiasm," Krack said of his appointment. "I have been working in motorsport for over 20 years, and worked in Formula 1 with Seb Vettel in 2006 and 2007 when I was a BMW-Sauber engineer and he was the team's test driver. I have huge respect for his speed and ability, and it will be fantastic to be reunited with him. "Lance Stroll is a seriously fast and talented driver, too, with 100 Grands Prix starts to his name, and I am very much looking forward to working closely with him." With Lawrence Stroll setting out his long-term plan to build Aston Martin into a championship challenging outfit, as the team continue a recruitment drive alongside their new factory build, Krack explained that he's always had his eye on the operation. "Team Silverstone has always impressed me," he said of the former Jordan and Force India team. "It is full of talented people and real racers. That racer's culture and values are what is required to succeed in motorsport – I know that and my new colleagues at Aston Martin know it, too. "We will work incredibly hard. We want to win. Together, we will."
