Alonso latest driver to take grid penalty at United States GP

Fernando Alonso will start Sunday's United States Grand Prix at the back of the grid after his Alpine car was fitted with a new engine.

Fernando Alonso will join Sebastian Vettel and George Russell at the back of the grid for the United States Grand Prix after taking on a new power unit. The Spaniard started his weekend in Austin on the wrong foot after stopping on track in FP1 with a suspected water leak. Although Alpine were able to get his car back up and running, they've opted to change engines in order to avoid further problems. The move was confirmed by the FIA during Saturday's FP3 session, with Alpine opting to change the entire power unit, which includes the ICE, MGU-H, MGU-K, Turbocharger, Energy Store, Control Electronics and Exhaust System. As a result, Alonso will start Sunday's race at the Circuit of the Americas at the back of the grid with Vettel and Russell, who took new engines this weekend. Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas was also fitted with a sixth new Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) of the season, meaning he will drop five places on the grid .
