Christian Horner is relishing the prospect of his team competing for the world title again. It occasionally leads to heated arguments with Mercedes, but the Red Bull Racing team boss explains at Channel 4 explains that it's easier than fighting within your own team.

The battle with Mercedes

Red Bull Racing won four world titles between 2010 and 2013, with the rivalry between Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber a particular headache for Horner. In the 2021 title fight, he and his team are mainly fighting Mercedes, but that is a lot easier than a fight within their own ranks, according to the team boss.

"It's much easier because you are only focused on your own performance. You can't control what's going on in the other team. This battle is one of the most intense in the last 20 years in the sport. It's two heavyweights of the sport going up against each other and that's what the sport has been craving for," said Horner.

"We have been fighting so hard to get back into a competitive position. Finally, we have a car, an engine and a driver to take the fight to Mercedes. It's so competitive that every session and every point just counts. I think this will be like that for the rest of the year."

Key opportunity for Red Bull

Horner knows that 2021 may be an opportunity that will not present itself again so soon. He, therefore, stresses to his team the importance of giving everything. Red Bull is now competitive enough to win a world title, whereas with the new rules for 2022 that remains to be seen over the coming seasons.

"The next 12 weeks will determine whether we win a championship or not. So it's what we put into it and every member of staff is leaving no stone unturned. This is our time to throw everything into this championship. It's only if we are at our very best that we can succeed," he added.

"We have proved that we can do this. Mercedes are beatable. Nobody would've thought this time last year with arguably the most competitive car ever that with an evolution of regulations, we would be in a position to challenge," concludes the Red Bull Racing team boss.
