The first of the Indycar doubleheader in Detroit came to a violent halt on lap 27, in connection with a big crash by Felix Rosenqvist. The McLaren driver's throttle got stuck in the corner exit, causing the car to drive full-throttle into the tire pile and cement blocks.

Shortly after the incident, the red flag was raised, due to the enormous damage sustained by both the car and the cement blocks. Fortunately, marshals were on the scene quickly to rescue a conscious, but clearly pained Rosenqvist from the car and take him to the medical centre.

The Swedish driver was driving in midfield when the accident occurred. A remarkable rattling sound gave experts the idea that the throttle of the McLaren had gotten stuck, causing the driver to accelerate into the tire pile at the exit of the turn.

Coming to terms

It has been confirmed online that Rosenqvist is lucid and alert, even though onboard footage after the crash suggested that the driver did not emerge from the crash pain-free.
