Grosjean: Leading races is why I came to IndyCar!

Romain Grosjean was beaming after his maiden F1 podium, despite narrowly missing out on taking his first victory.

Romain Grosjean was overjoyed after taking his maiden podium finish in IndyCar, in just his third start in the series. Having left Formula 1 behind at the end of 2020, Grosjean switched to IndyCar to drive for Dale Coyne Racing, and claimed his first pole position at the Indy Grand Prix. Leading for the first half of the race, Grosjean was only beaten by Ed Carpenter Racing's Rinus Veekay with the pair in a league of their own at the front. The French driver was thrilled with his second place, and was aksed his favourite thing about racing in IndyCar. "Leading races!" he told the media afterwards. "That's what I came for, and that's what we've done a bit today, the atmosphere, the country as well, discovering such an incredible place, and the atmosphere between the drivers and so on. So, really, it's a fully positive experience." With Grosjean's second place being his first podium since finishing third at the 2015 Belgian GP for Lotus, he was very happy with the job he and his new team had done. "That's a really good day," he said. "I think we've done really good work this weekend, we led at the start of the race and we were super fast." With this great weekend coming just six months after Grosjean's survived his horror crash at the Bahrain GP, he explained that the experience has changed his outlook to racing as he enters a new chapter in his career. "It's incredible," he said. "I mean, Bahrain was horrible but it's been, for my life, it's been a great experience and people really are behind me and I can tell and I can feel it. The support I'm having is incredible and, you know, I think you've only seen me smiling in the US. "That's why we are here to race and today we did a great race. The team did super good and just got a bit unlucky with the slower cars and the traffic but P2 in my third race in IndyCar is not too bad!"
