Wolff: Red Bull better on Saturdays, Mercedes on Sundays

The Mercedes team boss has remained realistic about his team's chances of success this season, but in spite of their recent strides forward, he still maintains that Red Bull has the edge on a Saturday.

Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff has described how Red Bull have still maintained an advantage over one lap, even with the Silver Arrows making great strides forward in recent races. The two teams have been fighting it out for race wins so far this season, in what is surely Red Bull's best opportunity to win both F1 world titles thus far in the turbo-hybrid era. While Wolff fancies his team's chances over a race distance, he does still accept that the Red Bull is the quickest car over a single lap. "Saturdays are clearly heading for Red Bull, but on Sundays, we are probably better," Wolff told Motorsport-Total.com. "We simply succeed in retrieving good performance even if the car is not fast enough. But you must never sit back and believe that there is a guarantee for something. In just two weeks, things could go in the other direction. You also have to learn from this." "We had flawless performances or at least almost flawless performances [in all of our race wins this season]." Wolff isn't the only Mercedes team member who is now talking up their chances against the previously imperious Red Bull. Andrew Shovlin, the team's long-standing engineer, believes that the seven-time world champions' good tyre wear stands them in good stead for the rest of the season against their Austrian rivals. "It seems that our car is a little more neutral. The Red Bull, on the other hand, gives the impression that it is using the rear tires more over a stint." Shovlin explained. "Of course, we would like it if it continued for the rest of the year. But you have to be a little careful."
