Alonso reveals Alpine's unique power steering setup

The two-time F1 world champion has explained how he has been forced to make changes to his driving style to get the most out of the Alpine car.

Fernando Alonso has revealed changes he has made to his driving style to adapt to the unique characteristics of Alpine's 2021 car. Alonso finished outside of the points-paying positions after a valiant effort to make the one-stop strategy work at the Spanish GP. Despite finishing in 17th, Alonso feels he has made steps to feel more comfortable with the car. "This car has a different approach for the power steering, for the feeling you have with the steering wheel," Alonso told RacingNews365.com and other select members of the press. "I am used to a different kind of assistance with the power steering and this is something that finally is coming into the car for for my side of the garage. "But there are more more things that I need to get used to. I think the car has different characteristics in the way it behaves. "With the change of regulation for next year, it makes no sense to make a change into the car philosophy. It's up to me to drive this car differently and this what I will try to do." Alonso was second-best to teammate Esteban Ocon at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya but said he had fun battling against other midfield cars on home soil. He feels there is more to come from his performances and is targeting fifth place in the constructors' championship. "The most important thing now is to get more performance out of the car from my side and I think we have identified the areas we can exploit more performance," added Alonso. "We are working on that and this week is going to be intense. "I think we can be the fifth team behind Ferrari and McLaren. This is good news because in the first two races, it was more difficult just to be in Q3."
