Recently F1 Management announced that the decision was finally taken: sprint races will be added to the sport, and will be run during three races in the current season. At which of the races this would happen was still unclear, but now Silverstone has announced that they will be the first to include a sprint race in their race weekend.

On its own website, the management of the legendary circuit said: "Silverstone is delighted to confirm that the British Formula 1 Grand Prix will be the first event to test the Sprint Qualifying format announced by Formula 1 and the FIA on 26 April."

Stuart Pringle, managing director of the circuit is not hiding his delight either: "We are extremely pleased that Silverstone fans will be able to experience Formula One sprint qualifying at the British Grand Prix for the first time this year. I appreciate the continued efforts of Formula 1 and the FIA to improve the entertainment at the circuit so that our spectators have even more to look forward to in July."

Although Silverstone was not on the calendar in 2020 due to COVID19, it will return stronger than ever this year, said Pringle: "The Friday and Saturday crowds at Silverstone are undoubtedly the biggest on the F1 calendar and after the drought of 2020, this year will be no exception. With ticket sales for Sunday already almost sold out, Saturday is now a great opportunity for fans to see a Formula One race at Silverstone this summer."
