Why Leclerc didn’t overtake Verstappen at Imola restart

Max Verstappen was leading the pack behind the safety car when the Red Bull driver suddenly slid off the track after losing the car. However, Charles Leclerc, who was running behind the Dutchman, did not go for the overtake. The Ferrari driver explained why he stayed behind.

The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix had several moments of drama with drivers sliding off the wet track at unfortunate times, with both Max Verstappen and Haas’ Mick Schumacher going off as they attempted to warm up their tyres before race restarts. In Schumacher’s case, his spin put him into the wall just outside the pit lane entrance and forced the rookie to go around the track several times without a front wing as the incident blocked the pits. Verstappen’s incident could have had a larger impact on the race, as the Red Bull driver slid off at the first Rivazza corner just before he was about to lead the pack back into racing after the red flag restart following the crash between Valtteri Bottas and George Russell. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who was running just behind the Dutchman, could have had a chance to overtake, but opted against the manoeuvre as he saw that Verstappen did not completely spin out, he told RacingNews365.com and select members of the press. “I considered it at one point but I at the same time backed off,” he said. “Looking back on it, I think it was the right choice, because he always had one wheel on the track, so I backed off. Because he didn’t completely spin obviously as we have seen, so I thought about it but it was too late then he was already back in front.”
