Raikkonen on potential F1 retirement plans

The former world champion is adamant that Alfa Romeo's competitiveness will not decide his future in Formula 1 as he looks to score his first points of 2021 at this weekend's Emilia Romagna GP.

Kimi Raikkonen reckons the pace of the new Alfa Romeo car will not dictate whether he stays in Formula 1 for 2022. The Finn is the most experienced F1 driver ever, having started 330 Grand Prix and is driving in his 19th season this year. Alfa Romeo's competitiveness over the coming races will not play a part in Raikkonen's decision to remain in the sport. "I doubt it’s going to make any difference on what happens next year,” Raikkonen told RacingNews365.com and other select members of the press. “But obviously the more better we can do, the more fun it is not just for us as drivers but for the team and everybody is more happy the better you do. “When you’re not exactly where you want to be, it’s always long years, it’s not as much fun and you can see it on everybody’s faces. "We keep working and improving and hopefully be up there where we want to be, hopefully regularly challenging for the points. But for sure it’s not going to be easy, everybody wants to be there so we just keep working.” Raikkonen finished just outside of the points at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix and is confident the team can move forward and fight against Alpine and Aston Martin in Imola this weekend. “For sure, we got a bit more horsepower,” said Raikkonen. “Definitely it is a step forward and it is a step in the right direction. "You always want more, but it’s going in the right way.”
