While one British talent breaks record after record, the next is ready to do even better. George Russell states that he has learned a lot from seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

The best teacher

Russell has been a Mercedes junior since 2017 and has therefore been able to look behind the scenes of the team. The young Brit says he learned a lot there from both Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

"Personally, I’m running out of superlatives for Lewis," Russell tells the F1 Nation podcast. "I think everybody knows how great he is. But for me, when I joined Mercedes and saw him working first hand, I knew he wasn’t purely just relying on natural talent."

More than talent

"He doesn’t just wake up on a Sunday morning and jump in and he’s the fastest. He puts a huge amount of effort in, which I don’t think he really gets the credit for. That grew my respect for him massively," the Williams driver says. According to Russell, Hamilton is working on every little detail to get the best out of himself.

Russell says Hamilton is the new standard at the moment: "Incredible driver, incredible bloke, and just a lot of respect for him."
