Ricciardo wonders: 'Why bother' on low-grip tracks

In Turkey, the drivers suffered a lot from low grip, in this case caused by a newly laid track. Although the low grip tracks are popular among some fans and drivers, Daniel Ricciardo can't wait for them to be taken off the calendar again. This he argues to Motorsport.com.

Ricciardo argues that such tracks go against the main goal of the teams: to make a car as fast as possible. “I think as well when teams are spending so much money developing cars and putting all the knowledge into designing the fastest race cars in the world, not being able to use them….if it was all the time, it would feel like a robbery.

“It's like why are we putting so much into these cars if we can't actually push the limits?” Ricciardo asks.

However, the Australian drives nuances by labeling the Turkish GP, with not only no grip but also adverse weather conditions as an outlier. “We'll probably never come to a situation like it again with this level of grip”, he says. 

Not everyone agrees

Not everyone agrees with Ricciardo, like Ross Brawn. He believes that success on circuits like Turkey simply depends more on the driver's talent, not the power of the car he drives. In Turkey, it was also clear that some drivers were distracted by the lack of grip and dropped their own race into the water.
