Lance Stroll had a hard crash in Mugello, hitting the tyre stack hard due to a broken tyre at one of the fastest points on the track. The Canadian was out of the race and his Racing Point seemed severely damaged. This was confirmed after a fire started at the back of the car, which was difficult for the marshals to get to.

In the end the bodywork of Stroll's car was pulled from the car to make sure the smoke stopped. When the fire was over, all that was left was a badly damaged F1 car. After research by Mercedes, it now appears that not only the bodywork is badly damaged, but also the engine can no longer be saved.

Future grid penalties for Stroll?

To Motorsport.com, the German engine manufacturer states that, following an examination of the engine, it appears that the power unit is too badly damaged to be repaired. For Stroll this means that he has to start using his third power unit, which still falls within the pool of parts that can be used without penalty.

However, there are still concerns for Racing Point, as the Canadian now has eight races to go on the same engine. So that seems to be going to be difficult, so Stroll will probably get grid penalties for using a new engine in the closing stages of the season.
