In 2021, a new racing class may be added to the support programme for Formula 1: the W Series. There is uncertainty as to the survival of the DTM. The options for the class are now being investigated.

The W Series has been running as a supporting programme for the DTM since 2019. The plan was also to see the women's racing class in Formula 1 racing weekends in the United States and Mexico. However, this plan could be scrapped because the W Series decided to cancel the whole season due to the corona virus.

Audi leaves DTM

But now the cooperation between the W Series and Formula 1 may be extended due to the problems that exist within the DTM. Audi will be leaving the German touring car class at the end of this year. This raises the question of how the series is to continue in 2021. The W Series is now looking around for other options, and Formula 1 seems to be the main candidate according to Motorsport.com.

There would be a plan to rotate the F2 and F3 in support of Formula 1. This would leave room in the programming. This could be filled by the W Series. Liberty Media could well be interested in this, because it fits in with the aim to achieve more diversity in the racing classes.
