Sergio Perez could make an unexpected return to race action after Racing Point has announced that his seven-day period of quarantine has been completed.

After missing the British Grand Prix, the Mexican could make an unexpected return for Racing Point at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix this weekend. The Silverstone-based outfit confirmed that the Mexican got the green light from Public Health England that he can end his seven-day quarantine today.

Perez tested positive for the novel Covid-19 coronavirus ahead of the British Grand Prix which ruled him out from the fourth round of the curtailed 2020 F1 season. Nico Hülkenberg stepped in for the Mexican last weekend. Despite settling quickly into a rhythm, the fast German failed to compete in the 52-lap race due to technical problems with his gearbox.

Following the British Grand Prix, there was some confusion over whether Perez would have to undertake seven or ten days of quarantine. A ten-day isolation would have forced him to sit out another grand prix, but his team has now confirmed that he was allowed by the Public Health England to leave his quarantine.

„Public Health England have confirmed that Sergio Perez’s period of quarantine has been completed. In line with the FIA Code Of Conduct, Sergio requires a verified negative test result for COVID-19 before he can enter the paddock. The testing process is taking place today.

„The team expects to make a decision on who is driving alongside Lance later today or first thing tomorrow morning,” read the Racing Point statement.
