The start of the Formula 1 season should take place at the beginning of July in Austria. Wherever there are still many doubts about the start of the season, the Red Bull Ring seems to be the best location to start.

Double races

So does Zak Brown. The CEO of the McLaren Group talks to Speedweek.com about the situation around the first race. What would it take to start that race, what could possibly stand in its way and why in Austria?

''In my opinion we are going to race fourteen to fifteen races in 2020 on ten different tracks. We have to assume that the virus will strike again and then you might have to take another step back. The problem with our sport is that we have to travel to different countries and that's always a risk,'' says Brown.

Austria the right choice

''It is therefore logical that we consider doing multiple races in one country, so that we can travel less and stay longer in one country. At least now that's the plan for Austria and England.'' Brown doesn't care about the smaller calendar. ''We've had wonderful world championships of sixteen races, so at fourteen we should be able to do that.''

Austria has been chosen as the first circuit and according to Brown that's not for nothing. "Spielberg is made for what we need. We have a military airfield next to the runway, so there is no need to fly with normal traffic. That way we will stay out of the big cities and if we manage to do that with the first few races, it will send a good signal to the outside world'', concludes Brown.
