Mercedes unveils its 2020 challenger

Mercedes has revealed the first images of their new machine with which they target a seventh straight title double in the 2020 Formula One World Championship.

After the team has already showed the new livery for the 2020 season on Monday, the field-leading outfit has released the first photos of their new W11. The new car is set to have its shakedown during a filming day at Silverstone.

The 2020 livery features only minor tweaks with the biggest change coming as a result of the arrival of the new sponsor Ineos. The Brackley-based team looks set to complete the season with an unchanged driver line-up with Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas starting their fourth season as team-mates.

At first glance, the brand-new W11 seems to be an evolution of its predecessor, the W10 just as it was the case with the team’s main rivals Ferrari and Red Bull. Apart from the modifications to the livery, the front of the car is reminiscent of the previous solution. The nose is still narrow and features big, aggressively-shaped overhang of the structural components. The front wing indicates that unlike Ferrari, Mercedes aims at producing more front-end downforce.

The front suspension is also an evolution of the previous solution that the team introduced back in 2017. The upper wishbones sit on an extension so that the airflow can run in a better area.

The biggest visible change is to be found at the bargeboards area. The previous version was the most complex one in the entire field, but the team’s engineers managed to step up even more in terms of complexity. The new bargeboards feature even bigger, curved sections with the first three elements pointing upwards to the front end of the car.
