A week has passed since the announcement that Pierre Gasly would be replaced by Alex Albon at Red Bull Racing for the remainder of the season but reports are circulating that someone else could have been in the seat.

Gasly was expected to keep his seat until the end of the season but the Hungarian Grand Prix appeared to be the breaking point for the team. They will now let Albon test himself as they look towards who will partner Max Verstappen next year.

Fernando Alonso has been constantly linked with a return to the sport since retiring in 2018 and it now appears Red Bull were prepared to let him in as early as the British Grand Prix. Gasly's best result came at Silverstone after he finished P4.

However, Mundo Deportivo are reporting that Red Bull offered Alonso the chance to replace Gasly at the British race but the Spaniard gave them a resounding no citing their inability to guarantee a title challenge.

He had earlier said he is not waiting on a call for a return to F1, saying: "I have a clear idea of what I'm going to do, I don't leave doors open, I'm not waiting or looking for anyone to call me."
