He may not have finished top of either practice session on Friday at the British Grand Prix, but two former British drivers have revealed how impressed they have been with the five-time champion's long run pace.

Long runs are an integral part of Friday practice and Hamilton's pace looked very strong as he finished second in the second session, less than a tenth behind teammate Valtteri Bottas.

Hamilton completed 34 laps in the session, more than any other of the top six drivers, leading to Jenson Button and Paul di Resta praising his pace.

Button said on Sky Sports: "Lewis' pace has been fantastic on his long runs. He has been on the medium tyres, but then so has everyone else."

Former Force India and Williams driver di Resta agreed, but said that the advantage might not last all weekend: "Lewis' pace has been supreme, but it's never going to be that far in front come Sunday."
