Abtiteboul: Renault aren't where they wanted to be

Cyril Abiteboul has admitted Renault are not achieving the goals they set ahead of the 2019 season but insists they will not change them as they look to gain some consistency.

Much was expected of Renault after they signed Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull Racing but they have struggled this season securing just two points finishes from a possible ten. After comfortably being best of the rest in 2018 they are still in with a chance of that title again, benefitting from the tight and unpredictable midfield battle, which is currently led by McLaren.

"The goal was to be well ahead of midfield, which we have not done so far," Abiteboul admitted to motorsport-total.

On only being ten points off McLaren who lead the race he said: "Honestly, that's the only good news.

"I think the situation will remain that way until the last third of the season.

"This will give us the opportunity to rearrange ourselves, [and] get the problems we had at the start of the season under control.

"That was not the only goal this year, it was also a goal to reduce the gap to the top teams, which is not happening right now, and we need to take the right steps to make it work.”
