Sainz insists "Renault has made progress"

The results might not have shown it this season but Carlos Sainz has insisted the Renault engine is getting closer to the sport’s frontrunners, Mercedes and Ferrari.

Renault have had several problems this season with cars using their engines suffering five retirements this season between McLaren and Renault themselves. However, Sainz has seen an upturn in form lately finishing seventh in Baku and eighth in Spain, his home Grand Prix.

Despite results suggesting otherwise, Sainz revealed the team’s progress on closing in on the top teams saying: “I think Renault has done progress, definitely, in terms of power you see at every track this year we are a lot closer to the top.

“There is still one engine for me which is excelling which is the Ferrari engine in quali mode which is still a good step ahead.

“But Renault has made progress and on the power side the engine [introduced in Spain] is supposed to be a progress in reliability which is where we are at the weakest so hopefully we will keep moving forward and they will keep bringing steps.

“But compared to last year we definitely have more power.”
