Daniel Ricciardo has insisted that Renault still have work to do following the Chinese Grand Prix but still feels the team can return to the top of the best of the rest as the midfield battle hots up.

Ricciardo finished seventh but there was more disappointment for Nico Hulkenberg as he retired following an issue with Renault’s new MGU-K. Ricciardo had failed to score points at the opening two races of the season but secured his first points for his new team.

Despite an overall strong weekend, the Australian admitted the team will need to improve if they are to increase their leads.

“I was a bit surprised by Perez’s pace in the race,” Ricciardo said after the race.

“Ideally we want to stretch the gap to the others but he had a really strong one.

“So I think there’s still certainly some areas we can improve.

“But generally speaking if we put the weekend together we should be at the front of that group.

The former Red Bull driver was relieved to secure his first points following a disappointing start adding: “Considering obviously, Bahrain we tried it, it didn’t work out for us, I’m happy that we made it work today.”
