Kevin Magnussen has admitted he’s pleased to be competing with the Red Bulls even if they had an issue as the Dane qualified sixth for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Magnussen followed up an impressive Australian Grand Prix, where he finished sixth, with an equal Q3 in Bahrain. His teammate Romain Grosjean showed why Haas are the frontrunners for the early best of the rest title as he qualified in provisional eighth.

Magnussen, however, had the Red Bulls in his sight as he was just fractions behind Max Verstappen.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 Magnussen said: “To be sixth is better than best of the rest, so that’s a bit new to us I guess, to be able to fight the Red Bulls.

“I don't know if they got it wrong today or what but we're happy.”

Magnussen went on to mention their midfield rivals, Renault, as he insisted, they needed to react to Hulkenberg’s strong Australian Grand Prix.

“In Australia, they were very good in the race and scored good points with Hulkenberg, so we need to try and do a good job tomorrow and get something out of the situation,” he added.
