George Russell has made clear he is not content with racing for last place in Formula 1. The 2018 Formula 2 champion joined Williams for this season however the team looks to be a long way off the pace.

Russell finished ahead of the returning Robert Kubica, who partners him at Williams in 2019. Although it might have provided a confidence boost to the rookie, Russell indicated he was not content to just be taking part in the sport.

“From a personal perspective, you've only got your teammate to compare against,” Russell told media after the race in Melbourne.

“Obviously I'm not disappointed to have come out on top, but at the end of the day I'm not interested in fighting him [Kubica] for last. We need to work together to make this right.

“Personally I can take a bit of satisfaction from this weekend. [Saturday] was a really great day for me, I left the circuit with my head held high and [in the race] we knew what we were in for.

“And obviously it wasn't a fair fight with Robert; he had a bit of damage at the start. So for both of us it was just bring the car home and just learn as much as we can.”
