F1 managing director Ross Brawn believes that the new aerodynamic changes to the 2019 cars are promising after the first race of the new season.

Formula 1 introduced new rules for this season in aid of overtaking. Not only were front wing designs simplified by removing the incredibly complex pieces aimed at directing airflow over the cars, but bargeboard sizes were also reduced while rear wing dimensions were increased to improve the effectiveness of DRS.

While Albert Park is not renowned for its overtaking by any means, Brawn says the first race was a positive sign as the F1 calendar moves on to more traditional circuits.

"Judging by the number of passing moves in the race; 14 this year (6 without DRS) compared to three in 2018, the initial signs are encouraging, especially as apart from the actual overtakes; we saw some thrilling battles," he told media after the race.

"Clearly those weren’t all down to the new aerodynamics, as the performance of the mid-field teams especially has closed up dramatically. However, several drivers said the cars felt more neutral when following another when compared to previous years.

"Here too, the Australian track isn’t the most accurate test, so I’d prefer to wait for at least another three races before drawing any conclusions. However, the initial signs are encouraging."
