Grosjean insists he won't win a race before 2021

Romain Grosjean doesn't think he'll be winning a race before 2021 as he remains adamant anyone outside the 'big three' has no chance of stepping on the top step on Sundays.

Over the past five years, no team outside Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull have won a race. The 2021 rules are expected to bring in a major overhaul and, from a fans perspective, hopefully, close the gap between top teams and the rest of the field.

“I think Formula 1 needs to get better at having more chances to win races. I don’t think that’s going to be before 2021," Grosjean said in an interview with RaceFans at Thursday's livery launch.

“If you look at the midfield race last year was quite exciting, a lot of changing of orders, and then there’s another race at the front. Ideally, you would like as many teams as possible to be fighting for a win.”

Haas has been steadily rising through the ranks ever since their introduction to F1 in 2016. 2018 demonstrated this well with their fifth-place finish in the constructors' championship which could have easily been fourth.

Grosjean insists their owner, Gene Haas, would like to see them take another step but knows Formula 1 needs to change in order to do this.

“I think people like Gene would like to see that as well in Formula 1. What’s the point of coming just to be always behind the same ones? But at the minute I think it’s going to be the same thing," Grosjean added.

“Ferrari’s announcing that they’re going to increase their budget for the year. Red Bull is saying that they spent a lot of money on the front wing. Mercedes has been working really hard as well. Don’t get me wrong, we haven’t been sleeping, but I think as long as there’s going to be so different resources between teams there’s always going to be a difference of development.”
