Carlos Sainz Jr. has accepted that Formula One needs to be improved in numerous ways, but the Spanish driver believes the positive points about the competition are being overlooked.

This year, the sport is undergoing some tweaks to the rules and regulations. The main ones being: simplifying the design of the front wing and front brake ducts - in order to reduce the aerodynamic wake the cars give out and increasing the chances of overtaking.

Sainz, who will be spending his first season with McLaren later this year, has accepted some poor races in 2018 have triggered these the before-mentioned changes, but he also believes there should be a more positive mentality adopted regarding F1 before the wider set of rule changes that will be introduced in 2021.

"This is a change in reaction a bit to what we saw last year in Australia, the first race," Sainz said, speaking to Crash.net. "I think the racing is still not good enough, I think we need to keep working towards 2021 on a better show, better spectacle for the fans and drivers and also start creatng a hype.

"Right now, there's a bit of a negative hype regarding the racing, the cars, but people tend to forget that last year's cars were the fastest ever in F1. And nobody talked about that.

"I get a bit nervous because everyone talks about 2004, how cool were those cars, but no-one ever talks about 2018 and Lewis Hamilton's pole positions being the fastest ever in F1 history.

"There's some positives from this year's cars and we just need to make sure the racing is better. With that I'm really sure the fans will appreciate that the most."
