Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola has stated that introducing a mandatory two pit stops per race is not the right option.

Isola believes that imposing a two-stop race is not the right option to make races more exciting.

“There was a lot of talk about imposing two stops by regulation,” Isola told Reuters in an interview at the Autosport International show.

“I’m not sure that is the right solution because you have the risk of all the cars stopping on the same lap,” added the Italian.

In the past few seasons, Pirelli have come under pressure as their tyres were often blamed for the lack of excitement in F1. The tyres meant that drivers would drive at a speed in order to preserve their tyres and not drive to their maximum.

“We want to be a bit more conservative because if we have one-stop races anyway, at this point it’s much better than we give drivers a bit more consistent tyres and they can push more and maybe we have a better show on track,” he added.

“We made some improvement on the product itself, we’ve different compounds in order to reduce the over-heating. But the over-heating is not avoidable when you follow another car and you lose a lot of downforce.”

It will be interesting to see if the new tyres that Pirelli have introduced will enhance the competitiveness of Formula 1.
