Jean-Eric Vergne is in a better position than most to draw the similarities and differences between Formula 1 and its electric alternative, Formula E. Talks of a merger are still premature at this stage, but the Frenchman would be open to the idea.

Vergne is the reigning world champion of Formula E, and is currently sitting in second, with the season only just started.

There have been rumours about the FIA opening up a single championship that has the 'best of both worlds' being used.

Vergne has admitted that isn't likely until at least "maybe in 2030"; but the idea itself is something that the former Toro Rosso driver is open to.

"In the future, maybe in 2030 (his thoughts on a combination of both), there will only be electric cars or produced thanks to new technologies, maybe we will stop seeing petrol vehicles or things like that," the 28-year-old told FormulaPassion.it.

"So, Formula 1 will have to completely change its own mentality and open up to the electric. But once again, it is not for me to judge. I think Formula 1 will remain true to itself. It is the most important series in motorsport and I believe it will remain so.

"Formula E is something different and in my opinion, it does not (yet) compete with Formula 1. I heard that maybe one day they could both merge together. It would be nice for me if they kept both the best of Formula 1 and the best of Formula E."
