Robert Kubica says it was "not easy" to turn down Ferrari's offer to become their Formula 1 development driver in 2019. Instead, Kubica will make his return to full-time F1 as a Williams driver in the upcoming season.

Ferrari offered the role after Antonio Giovinazzi and Daniil Kvyat departed to fulfil driving positions at Sauber and Toro Rosso.

During the 2017 season, Kubica was Williams' test and development driver and managed to get on track during practice sessions. In an interview with Autosport, he reveals the truth about the debate he had prior to his contract signing.

"I knew what I would have liked to do, but sometimes things are a bit more complicated than they look from the outside," Kubica told Autosport.

"I had some opportunity which I think was very interesting, and it was not easy to say no. In the end, I am a racing driver - even though I haven't been racing for quite a long time - and this racing mentality has won out. I'm happy to have made this decision because it is a big challenge."

Kubica hasn't raced since the final race of the 2010 season. His well-documented rally crash changed his life. Ever since he has been working hard to get back to where he was. The 2008 Canadian Grand Prix winner believes he has the drive and commitment in order to make his comeback work.

"You have to have a lot of drive to do it because I went through this 12 years ago, and in the end, I said I think I have the energy to do it again," Kubica added.

"I'm not worried or scared of this challenge and I think I can make it work. I have a great opportunity and it is a happy ending to the long journey I have been on."
