Former Williams driver Sergey Sirotkin has secured a test drive at Formula E team Mihandra Racing, as the Russian will take part in the sport's rookie test ahead of the Marrakesh ePrix in Morocco.

Sirotkin was fighting for the second seat at Williams for 2019 next to George Russell with the team's test driver Robert Kubica, but it was the Pole who eventually secured the seat, leaving Sirotkin with nowhere to go in F1. His financial backers SMP Racing had pulled the funding for his Williams seat, arguing there was no point in being at the Grove-based team because of the lack of performance and development.

“Formula E is now one of the most rapidly developing championships,” Sirotkin was quoted by FormulaSpy.

“The competition here is at a very high level.

“More manufacturers are entering the series as they are confident that electric cars have strong future potential.

“More technical solutions appear in these cars and they are progressing rapidly.

“I drove a Formula E car in 2016 but now the car generation has changed it will be interesting to try the difference.”

The 23-year-old did test an FE car already back in 2016, but this will be his first time driving the new Gen2 car.
