Fernando Alonso believes his LMP1 and IndyCar experience helped him improve as a driver and played a vital role in the 21-0 victory in the qualifying at McLaren. If you include the 2017 season, the Spaniard went on a run of 26 qualifying finishes ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne.

Trying to shed light on the secret, Alonso believes the tests and extra experience he's picked up over the last couple of years have helped him improve.

"It's difficult to know exactly your speed in the car. "ou only can follow the numbers, and this year it has been my best year by far in terms of qualifying battles," Alonso told Autosport.

"So, I feel I'm competitive, and I'm fast. Probably, a testing day in IndyCar and the WEC programme this year, I feel a better driver or a more complete driver. I understand more the behaviour of the cars, other driving techniques, other ways of saving energy, saving the tyres.

"The overall concepts of different philosophies, I think it helps you as a driver."

The next best record in 2018 came at Sauber. Charles Leclerc dominated Marcus Ericsson which surely helped his signing to fill Alonso's former car at Ferrari after just one season in Formula 1.
