Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff has revealed he suffered a knee injury during the team’s post-season celebrations in Abu Dhabi.

The German manufacturer held an end-of-season party following November’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which was won by Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton’s 11th victory of the season capped off another successful year for Mercedes, which retained both world championships to continue its perfect record of having won every single title on offer since the start of the V6 hybrid era in 2014.

Speaking at an event for team sponsor Hewlett-Packard only days after the season finale, Wolff admitted he was on crutches having sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

“Lots of partying and the ACL gave up in the knee,” Wolff said.

“One of the very famous racing drivers who was there at the party said in your body only your brain works and the rest is a wreck.”

It marks the latest in a series of recent injuries for the 46-year-old, who broke his knee-cap while training ahead of the 2015 season.

In July 2014, Wolff fractured his shoulder, collar bone, elbow and wrist in a cycling accident during a team event.
