Lewis Hamilton says he is very much hoping for a strong Red Bull package next season so Max Verstappen can fight with him for the 2019 world championship. The two went head-to-head for the Brazilian Grand Prix victory on Sunday, with Hamilton coming out on top after a bizarre incident with Verstappen and Esteban Ocon.

Whilst Hamilton was on the older tyres in the battle for the lead, Verstappen's clinical overtakes to go from fifth to first was a great advertisement of what could be if Red Bull is able to get on terms with Mercedes and Ferrari next season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Hamilton said he was hoping for a battle with the young Dutchman for the F1 title, adding that he has been impressed with Verstappen's rise in Formula One since joining back in 2015.

"This year they've been incredibly strong and I can only imagine next year, they're going to be even stronger," Hamilton said.

"I think for the sport it will be great if Red Bull are more in the battle with Ferrari and Mercedes and we welcome any more teams.

"Max is driving really well this year. He's such an awesome, young talent. I'm looking forward to many races with him.

"At the weekend in Brazil, we had the engine problems so I didn't feel I was really able to fight with him on track but I'm looking forward to the day that happens."

Despite taking the lead away from Hamilton during the race at Interlagos, a controversial incident with the lapped Force India of Ocon cost the Red Bull driver certain victory and handed the win to the 2018 champion.
