Gasly; Q3 is a great achievement

Gasly; Q3 is a great achievement

Pierre Gasly produced a brilliant performance to reach Q3 in changeable conditions at the Brazilian Grand Prix, and will start ninth after Daniel Ricciardo’s grid penalty.

Gasly, who replaces Ricciardo at Red Bull next season, is in his penultimate race for Toro Rosso before making the big move to the senior team.

He is only two points behind his fellow Frenchman Romain Grosjean in the drivers’ standings and will start two places behind the Haas driver.

If Gasly were to score more points than Grosjean in the final two races and finish above him, it would be a fantastic achievement considering Grosjean’s experience and the difference in the quality of the two cars.

Gasly was pleased with his showing yesterday and said: "I'm happy with my performance and P9 is a good position to start from tomorrow (due to Ricciardo's penalty).

“It was quite stressful and exciting at the same time for the whole session. The rain increased in Q1, but we managed to put everything together to make it through to Q2 and then Q3.

“It was tricky, because in these weather conditions you never know what to expect, how much grip you will have when you approach the corners, how wet they are going to be, but I think we did really well in the end.”

Gasly is looking for points today to add to the 29 he has already scored in his first full season in F1.

He added: “I hope we will have some good battles and I will certainly push flat out to score some more points tomorrow."
