Daniel Ricciardo says that losing out to his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen in qualifying in Brazil was tolerable as their fight wasn't for pole position. The Australian gave a rather cheeky answer after qualifying that despite finishing behind his teammate, he still got pole position back in Mexico.

Their fight at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez was arguably Red Bull's final chance of the season for a pole position, with Interlagos and Yas Marina the remaining races that are unsuited to the RB14.

Ricciardo took pole in Mexico much to the dismay of Verstappen and the ever-smiling fan favourite was quick to remind him of that after qualifying had ended in São Paolo.

“Max got me by two-thousandths,” Ricciardo told media. “Similar margin to last week (but reversed). Fortunately, this isn’t for pole so it is a little bit more tolerable.

“It was all right, I was fairly solid. I have a bit of work to do from 11th but I think we’ll have a decent car.

“In the end the pace was not that bad on the low fuel stuff. We will be pretty decent tomorrow afternoon.”

Ricciardo will start from P11 after taking a fresh turbo for the Brazilian Grand Prix. His retirement from a probable podium in Mexico only worsened after a marshal sprayed extinguisher up the exhaust, breaking the old unit.
