Stoffel Vandoorne could be set for a reserve role with Mercedes. The Belgian will leave F1 for Formula E at the end of the season switching to the Mercedes-backed HWA team which could open up a path back into Formula One for him.

According to Motorsport.com, the link between HWA AG and Mercedes AMG F1 could land Vandoorne back in the F1 picture by signing him up to be reserve driver for the Silver Arrows.

"Yes, that is possible. For the time being nothing has been decided yet. There are no plans yet," Vandoorne is quoted by Formule1.

Earlier in the year, he admitted that a reserve driver role was on the radar and that his primary race seat would come first no matter what, but he also acknowledged he would be looking at future options also.

“The priority is first to find a race drive which will be the main focus and target and then we can see whatever options will open up next to that.

“It’s a bit of an evaluation to make really. Obviously you’re not only thinking one year ahead, you’re also thinking to the future. At the moment, I can’t really tell.

“It’s kind of hard to know exactly. To have a new challenge and having to go a few years, that’s not a bad thing sometimes.”
