Sainz optimistic for 2019 Renault engine

Engines are a big talking point in Formula One these days, and Carlos Sainz seems to follow the Renault ones. Both teams he has raced for have used Renault engines, and his future team will as well as McLaren enter their second year with the French power unit.

The Spanish driver has had an ok year with Renault but has been comfortably outscored by Nico Hulkenberg and the team is now fighting off Haas to try and secure fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship.

Sainz will be expected to outscore his team mate next year, something he has only done once in his career, when he is joined by British rookie Lando Norris.

He will also be joined by Renault’s 2019 engine and despite the engine being one of the more unfancied power trains in the field, the former Toro Rosso driver remains optimistic for the new season.

He said: “In winter testing maybe my face changes, but up until then I am going to be optimistic and think that Renault are finally going to deliver an engine that is clearly at the level of Ferrari and Mercedes.

From what I heard [the engine] is still going to deliver a step that Renault and McLaren need next year.

“And thanks to that, hopefully we should be closer in top speeds to our competitors and we shouldn’t start compromising the rear wing for these kinds of tracks.

“And thanks to that we should start really start to fight the Mercedes and Ferrari cars also on the straights, not only in the corners.”
