Ericsson encouraged by Leclerc move

Marcus Ericsson has taken positives from his rivalry with team mate Charles Leclerc, who has been promoted to Ferrari for next year, as the Swede looks to get a drive for the 2019 season.

Ericsson’s future is not yet confirmed, although it seems like Sauber will keep him on as a team mate for the incoming Kimi Raikkonen for next season.

Ericsson did have a spell of not scoring points for 49 races before his ninth place in Bahrain this year.

He has scored three points finishes in the last seven races, whereas the Ferrari-bound Leclerc has only managed to reach the top ten twice.

Ericsson has admitted that his future at Sauber is not secure, especially seeing that Sauber’s partner, Alfa Romeo, have first pick on who will partner to 2007 World Champion.

Ericsson conceded: “The competition for the seats is a lot higher than it's been the last few years.

“I think the signing of Kimi really shows that.

“Now there's only one seat left for next year so I need to really impress and work hard to show that I should really be in the team.”

The 28-year old also admits that he thrives under pressure and is ready to give his all to stay in Formula One for a sixth season.

"The pressure is high, but I like that.

“They haven't really given me any specifics or a timeframe for it, but I know I need to perform now.

"If that's enough for a contract or not, that's not up to me. But I need to keep pushing and trying to impress.”
